Common infrared tests in clinical chemistry include glucose, blood and urine analyses [8, 9, 55 61]. The quanti cation of glucose in body uids is an important aspect of clinical analysis, especially in the case of blood glucose measurements for diabetic patients. The use of near-infrared spectroscopy and attenuated total re ectance (ATR) spectroscopy in the mid-infrared region lend themselves to the study of glucose in such aqueous environments, and partial least-squares (PLS) and principal component analysis (PCA) methods have been successfully applied to quantitative analysis of glucose samples [55]. Biological uids may also be investigated by using NIR or ATR spectroscopy, both as native uids or as dry lms [9]. Figure 7.20 demonstrates the effectiveness of NIR spectroscopy as a technique for the quantitative analysis of native serum samples. This gure shows scatter plots that compare the concentration results obtained by using NIR spectroscopic analysis with the results obtained by using standard-reference clinical methods [9, 62]. In these experiments, the calibration procedure involved using a number of spectra and independent reference analyses, and then to optimize the PLS models for each constituent individually. DQ 7.2 Figure 7.20 compares serum triglycerides, cholesterol, urea and lactate concentrations obtained by using NIR spectroscopy with true concentrations provided by standard clinical laboratory procedures. Comment on the effectiveness of NIR spectroscopy as a quantitative techniques for each of these serum components. Answer The amount of scatter in the plots for triglycerides and urea is minimal, while that for cholesterol is reasonable, and so NIR spectroscopy appears adequate for the analysis of each of these components. However, there is considerable scatter in the plot for lactate, and so NIR spectroscopy is unsuitable for the quantitative analysis of this component in native serum. Lactate appears in quite low concentrations in serum.

This became possible through the progress in microprocessor technology and the availability of Java for smart cards. We hope it has become clear that making use of their advanced features requires sophisticated middleware concepts that are tailored to speci c application areas. Many approaches are still evolving, especially in the mobile telecommunication world. Thus, although this chapter on middleware concludes, the story on smart card middleware continues.

Jim Bradshaw By the time Mark brought me over to speak with Jim, his conference call had concluded. Since Mark was on his way off-site to visit with a local pension client, I took the opportunity to have my conversation with Jim in his of ce. Because I had not previously met or spoken with Jim, we spent a fair amount of time going over his biography. Jim and Andy met at Victory Asset Management in the mid-1980s. While Andy was in the operations area, Jim started off as an analyst for the rm s equity, xed income, and balanced products. Both he and Andy stayed with Victory up until the time they left (with Mark) to start CAM. Jim s position and responsibilities progressed over the years at Victory. At the time of his departure, Jim was the senior portfolio manager in charge of all high net worth accounts. Jim stated that both he and Andy left because they felt that the next step in their professional careers should be equity ownership; unfortunately, VAM had made it clear that equity would remain solely with the rm s founder and his family. We discussed Jim s experience at VAM and I can summarize it as by stating that VAM is a value-oriented shop that emphasizes capital preservation over all things. The equity product and the equity portion of the balanced product
